Obituary for Laurel Paulette Hale

Laurel Paulette Hale, age 78, of McMinnville, Tennessee, passed from this life on Friday, October 28, 2022, after a lengthy struggle with Parkinson’s disease.

Born March 20, 1944, in McMinnville, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late Verna Beatrice Hale and Thurman Hartford Hale. In addition to her parents, Paulette is predeceased by brothers James William Hale, Donald Everett Hale, Gary Stephen Hale, Daniel Richard Hale, and sister Betsy Diana Hale.

Surviving are sisters Rebecca Lynn Hale and Betty Bounds, both of McMinnville, TN. Paulette is also survived by brothers Larry Hartford Hale and Charles Ronald Hale and wife Peggy of McMinnville, TN, and brother Terry Douglas Hale and wife Peggy of Philadelphia, PA. Paulette is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and their families.

Paulette attended Fairview Elementary School and Irving College High School. After high school, she attended Belmont College, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in English, and Austin Peay State University, where she earned a Master’s degree, also in English. She spent her entire career teaching high school English and helping her students better understand and appreciate the joy of reading and the importance of the written word. She also, undoubtedly, taught her thousands of students important lessons about the values of honesty, kindness, decency, civility, loyalty, and hard work, all reflected in the living of her own life.

All who remember Paulette know that in addition to her love for family, friends, and former students and colleagues, she was also a great lover of the natural world. Even as a child, she would bring home armfuls of wildflowers that grew in the woods and on the creek banks near her home and would then carefully and artfully arrange those flowers in any vase or mason jar available to her. Her love of beautiful things also extended beyond the natural world. She was an avid collector of antique art glass and furniture and books and paintings.

Visitation will be Saturday, November 5, from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. at Gardens of Memory Funeral Home in McMinnville, TN. A service in celebration of her life will begin at 2:00 p.m. at Gardens of Memory Funeral Home.
